Stack Nest Fish Containers Help Producer Reduce Product Damage

Fish is not just delicious, but also a healthy source of proteins and good fats. This is why it is part of the cuisine of almost all countries in the world. As a result, there is a growing demand for fresh fish and seafood. In this case study, we will demonstrate the benefits of using stack nest fish containers to keep this delicate food safe during the entire journey to stores.

The Old Situation

One of the largest producers and distributors of fish in Central Europe relied on polystyrene trays to deliver fresh and frozen fish from its distribution centers to marketplaces and retail stores.

The company received constant reports of damaged products from clients. The fish would arrive crushed, marked or dented. These products would be discarded or sold at a significant discount to canned food producers.

The fish producer contacted the Logistic Packaging team, asking for a solution to reduce the quantity of damaged products in transit.

Our Experts Evaluate the Challenges of the Packaging Project

Our packaging specialists discussed with the client to understand their requirements for a reliable solution to pack and deliver fish. The fish producer explained the key features of the packaging material they needed:

  • Suitable for cold storage
  • Provided with water drain
  • Stable in stack, provided that the bottom does not crush the fish stored in the container below
  • Reduced volume on return logistics
  • Ability to track shipments
  • Branding.

After a careful analysis of these requirements, our team identified a suitable packaging solution and the necessary customizations.

Logistic Packaging Proposes Customized Stack Nest Fish Containers

We selected the model of stack nest fish container with a 800 x 400 mm footprint and a capacity of 25 kg as the ideal packaging solution for deliveries from the fish producer’s distribution hub to clients.

For smaller deliveries, we also proposed the same container model with a 500 x 400 mm footprint and a volume of 8 liters.

These specially designed containers for the storage and transport of fresh and frozen fish meet all the client’s requirements:

  • They are made of virgin HDPE approved for food contact
  • The containers can be used within a temperature range between -20 and +50 degrees Celsius
  • They are provided with drainage and spillway
  • They feature solid and ergonomic handles for safe and easy manipulation
  • The special bottom design prevents the crushing of the fish stored in the container below when the containers are stacked.

Also, both the models of stack nest plastic fish containers would be customized to suit the client’s specifications with:

  • Printed logo
  • Printed barcode
  • Visual guidelines for the correct stack and nest positions.

The Client’s Feedback after Implementation

The fish producer chose to start with the larger sized containers and ordered a test batch. Within a few months, they placed a larger order, for both the large and small container models.

Their clients report a significant decrease in product damage on delivery. Practically, cases of crushed fish are rare incidents, most of the deliveries arriving in very good condition.

Also, the client noted a decrease in return logistics costs, because the nested containers reduce the volume of the stack by up to 70%. Moreover, they expect to reach the full ROI of the investment in the new packaging materials in 2 years. By contrast, the older packaging trays never reached full ROI by the time they had to be replaced.
