attached lid containers seen in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault

Attached Lid Containers Used to Store Seeds in the Doomsday Vault

Even busy logistics experts take a break every once in a while. During such a rare but welcome moment, the Logistic Packaging experts started exploring the newly launched virtual tour of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Better known as the Doomsday Vault, it is a highly secure unit in a remote location in Norway, storing seeds from all over the world. And starting with the beginning of the tour, a familiar sight greeted us: attached lid containers.

As you can observe when you take the tour, all new entries accepted into the vault arrive in attached lid containers. Also, advancing deeper into the underground compound, we were also happy to notice that every type of seed from every corner of the globe is stored in the same type of stackable and nestable containers.

Logistic Packaging Specialists Approve the Conservationists’ Choice

We are aware of the importance of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It is one of those things that everyone wishes we will never need, but are reassured to know it exists. As logistics and packaging specialists, we know how sensitive seeds are.

Their germinating power must be preserved – otherwise they would be useless. Thus, they need to be stored in a cool and dry place, and completely protected from spillages and any kind of contamination.

To be fair, if we had to choose the ideal packaging solution for this task, we would have also recommended attached lid containers.

Built to Last and Protect Goods

Let us consider the need for protection and guaranteeing the integrity of the contents. Few reusable packaging solutions offer the same level of assurance as attached lid containers. Their crocodile lid closes tightly and can be further secured with a seal.

Thanks to the ingenious system of hinges, the container represents a complete packaging unit, adequate for intense use. There is no need to look for the right sized lid and secure it with accessories. Everything needed is built in.

Good Range of Temperature Resistance

The seed vault is climate controlled and kept cool. However, the low temperature will not cause long term damage to the stack nest boxes filled with seeds. They are designed to withstand temperatures between -20°C and +40°C.

Smooth Walls Allow Fixing Label Holders

Traceability is essential for the purposes of the global seed vault. Each box must be clearly labeled with the type of seeds it contains and the country/area of origin. Attached lid containers have smooth walls, perfect for fixing label holders.

They are necessary for protecting the label from damage of any kind – spillage, fading, tearing, etc. The label holder can also be applied over the lid, acting as a seal.

The future of our food is kept safe in attached lid containers. Your products can benefit from the same exceptional level of protection in the warehouse and during transit. Contact the Logistic Packaging team to start discussing your application!
